Lee Hsien Loong, who on thursday will become Singapore's third only Prime Minister certainly puts the "N" into the word Nepotism.

Singapore, a high tech, affluent state. Proves the terrible point that a monied, Western style consumer culture, doesn't neccessarily mean democracy and free speech.
Boon Mee
Maybe freedon of speech has taken a back seat in the Democratic model Singapore follows but it works OK for them. Some of the rigidity might be left over from when the nation-state was formed and you had Indians, Malays and Chinese all in "turf wars".

Admittetly, it is a sterile place to live and somewhat boring but it's clean! The food's good and if you like to shop and not bothered by the PAP running things, it's OK.

Hi Boon Mee,

Its true, despite what Western idealists may think, the people of Singapore actually DO like the way their country is run (or at least the vast, vast majority do). And compared to other multi ethnic island states such as Fiji (which admittedly is without the Chinese influence but does have the Commonwealth background) it is a far more stable and dynamic (economically) state.

Just don't try sticking your chewing gum underneath the seat of a park bench!
For otherwise, as Ned Flanders would say...

As far as even having chewing gum, from what I've heard it's now illegal to even bring the stuff into Singapore! ohmy.gif

The nepotism is a sign that the people of Singapore are afraid of things changing for the bad,

Boon Mee,

Those wacky Singaporeans! I wonder if they've outlawed 'laughing out loud' yet! wink.gif smile.gif

Gore_Lost,

Your right, they seem to display a back to the future type trip when it comes to Freedom of Expression, this in built reactionary nature simply can't be good for their mental health! smile.gif

Singapore seems to be loosening up a bit. Whereas Thailand is now shuting down at midnight Singapore goes around the clock. Still bloody expensive.

Well, you gotta work your way up and as soon as you've learned to tie up those workboats, I suspect the OIM will promote you! laugh.gif

I have heard changes were afoot in the city/state...what are they and have they come into effect yet?
Last time I was there I did notice a few table top dacers at Queens Disco Pub (4 floors, Gnd floor).
I have lived in S'pore for many years and have been disallusioned with the place, but would still love to get another job there... biggrin.gif

Actually the wages are a lot lower in Singapore, my last project I was earning about 3/4 of what I do now!!!
But the standard of living is much higher...well there is no standard where I work now so that is not such a definitive statement!

Looks like West Texas ! laugh.gif

Resembles more of Aberdeen than George Bush's proud state. When you go "Granny-Grabbing" in those pubs up there you come away with the hefers pictured above! laugh.gif

How much longer are you going to be in Baku, Leith?
