Bush hails Kerry, slams smear ads

US President George W Bush has praised the military record of his election rival, John Kerry, and called a halt to unofficial negative advertising.

Mr Kerry's campaign team has alleged Mr Bush backed ads by Republican-leaning Vietnam veterans which questioned Mr Kerry's record for bravery in the war.

The president said Senator Kerry served "admirably" and called for attacks by external campaign groups to be banned.

The Democrats have described Mr Bush's remarks as "too little, too late".

"The moment of truth came and went, and the president still couldn't bring himself to do the right thing," John Edwards, Mr Kerry's running-mate, said.

I think that Kerry made a big tactical blunder by making this campaign focus on his service in a war that he opposed, and that this latest move by Bush was well timed, to make him look like he is denouncing the sleazy side of the Republican campaign, and thereby extracting maximum benefit from it.

It's all politics...

Next thing you know Kerry will accuse Bush of a Watergate thing....*ahem* knowing Kerry was about to put out the ad bashing Bush over not bashing the Swift Vets, and timing his (Bush's) anti-indenpendent ad speech accordingly to make Kerry look stupid.

When WILL Kerry realize he doesn't need anyone's help to look stupid?

John Edwards is very disappointed. He and John Kerry wanted President Bush to call on just the Swiftees to stop their ads, but all they got was a call to end all advertising by 527s.

And the title of this thread is a lot misleading. Bush didn't call to ban the Kerry ads only.

I will give an opinion about this Swift Boat thing. Actually, the 527s are active on both sides, but on the Bush side I only know of the Swift Boat group. I have not seen any 527 ads so far, probably because I live in New York. Whether the Swift Boat account is accurate or not, it does not matter, what matters is it is highly talked about, and for dollar bang for the buck, it has been hugh. The money spent for 527 ads for Kerry I understand to be 60 million, but Kerry's denial and attack of the Swift Boat group makes him look BAD. If I were an undecided, which I am not, I believe this would draw me away from Kerry.
