"The figures tell a quite dramatic story. The US Bureau of Census announced in June 2003, that as of July 1, 2002 (based on the 2000 US Census) America's Hispanic population numbered 38.8 million, or 13.5 per cent of the total population of 288.4 million..."

"Politicians have not overlooked the Latino trend, although representation at the highest levels does not reflect population trends. In Congress there are just 22 Hispanic members of the House of Representatives or about 4 per cent of the total, in the Senate there are none. New Mexico's Democratic govenor Bill Richardson is the country's sole Latino govenor...That is all, obviously, about to change."

Quotes and figures sourced from an article by Tony Walker, Australian Financial Review.

This is all true.
The US is becoming LESS ANGLO by the minute.
Look at a map of the Americas and you can see why.
Latinos in America tend to be Catholic and have bigger families too. This is a ripe group for the DEMOCRATIC PARTY, and this year John Kerry has made great inroads in getting their support.

MUAAAHAHAHAHAHAAAAA!!!!!!!!!!

here here! the Latino population is taking over the entire Western Hemisphere once again!!

African and indigenous peoples from Puerto Rico, Dominican Republic and Cuba are taking over the Northeast, from Boston to DC..

indigenous peoples from Mexico, Guatemala and Central America are repopulating the Southwest... the very lands that were once stolen by an American act of aggression over a century ago will once again become Aztlan!!

Florida is virtually a nation of its own, quickly being dominated by people of color from all over Latin-America and the Caribbean!

u gringos better watch yourselves, before YOU are the minority, and the Black, Brown and indigenous peoples take back what is rightfully ours and force YOU into the bondage which u have placed us in for over 500 years.

make ammends now, white America, before the tables are turned!!!!

It's been said that in 30 years or so, Non-Hispanic groups will be the minority of this country, and i'm not doubting that for the moment.

well, considering that the Spanish, Portuguese, French, English, Dutch and Germans all "settled" (aka stole) land and exploited people of color, i dont think u can quite narrow it down to me being "anti" any single group.

im not anti-anything.

im just pro-truth.

What so funny Huey?

Do you find the chronic under representation of Latinos in the US political system a joke? I sure as ###### dont.

Latino America has a representation in the US Congress of just 22 members, 22 people out of 38.8 million...geez thats really funny

Not 1 single Senator...hilarious, isnt it

A stupid red neck gringo like me has trouble understanding your logic

If I were a Latino I'd be ######ing furious at being marginalised by my country's political system...but hey what would a gringo like me know eh...
Huey_P
LOL campbell.

slow down brother, u misunderstood me.

i am Latino (first gen. Peruvian), and i agree 100% with your position.

Latino underrepresentation and misrepresentation in government, and in virtually all other aspects of American society in general, is DEFINETELY a problem.. and i speak on it frequently with alot of different people.

as a matter of fact, there is a Hispanic candidate for Congress right here in my district of Florida (Sarasota/Manatee/DeSoto) that could potentially be running against Bush cronie Katherine Harris (of Election 2000 fame)..

trust me, i would love NOTHING more than to boot that old sea-hag from Congress and replace her with CJ Czaia, who has even spoken in political science classes at my college.

if u mistook my revolutionary Latino nationalist post as being a joke, u would only be half right..

i'm very much in favor of a Latino majority here in the United States, and i was jokingly referring to "gringos" watching what they say now about us, because things might change when WE are the majority. lol.

just a lil antagonism for the white-washed, clean-underwear conservatives on this board who are members of the same party as every minority's favorite politicians.. rolleyes.gif

us Brown folk really LOVE Trent Lott, John Ashcroft, Strom Thurmond, Tom Ridge and George Bush, who snubbed the NAACP, doesnt care enough about Native Americans to be able to discuss "tribal sovereignty" when speaking in front of them, and who as governor of Texas executed more people than any other governor in HISTORY.. most of them being Black.

yup we love Republicans.

they'll be the first ones we enslave and send out to the tomato fields when Latinos take America over (again).

Americas holding you down? blink.gif

Get what you deserve? blink.gif

Nothing really makes sense anymore.

Maybe it is time to turn the U.S. into some sort of junta.

At least I speak spanish, and can pass in the summer. cool.gif

PS Vato- I'll talk to my boys tonight, but I don't think they hold So. Americans as equals, not to mention blacks. One sad fact, is that latinos can treat latinos worse, than a gringo ever would.
Huey_P
Kerry for Senator, let me fill u in on a couple of things..

if u would have done your research, u would know that most of us Peruvians are INDIANS.

just like the Indians were killed and oppressed here, Indians were killed and oppressed in South America (altho the Spaniards seemed a little more interested in raping the women than outright slaughtering them like the English, Dutch and Germans here).

are u trying to tell me that Indians HAVEN'T been "held down", and that they've achieved equal socio-economic status as u white immigrants?

well.. i guess that's a first.

now i have actually seen someone denying that Indians have faced hardships as a result of European conquest!!!!

what's next? dont tell me, let me guess... youre goin to tell me there was no Holocaust for Jews either?!?

well golly gee, what was I smokin during all those history classes i took. unsure.gif

Actually Campbell its 22 members out of 435, which is 5.1% Latino reps. However it is only in recent years that the percentage of Latinos in this country has begun to rise dramtically, so I don't think it is such a poor showing, as they are only...what did your quote say?.... 13.5% of the population in total.

But probably only 3/4ths (maybe a little less but bear with me) of that number are of voting age and when you consider that usually less than half the population of voting age actually votes in the US.... only about 5% of the Latino population is voting. So I think not a bad showing at all, and it can only improve..... not that I think only Latinos are voting for other Latinos, but Latino populations are pretty concentrated in certain areas of the country.

There's really a lot more to consider than simply numbers.

Walker's article is a really good insight into America today, it's mainly about his trip to and expirences in the great metropolis of Chicago, particularly in a suburb named "Cicero" (to be honest I don't know much about Chicago other than Al Capone and cool Jazz so I'm really just trying to learn about the city/people with this). He talks about the purchasing power of Hispanic Americans, in 2002 their spending was estimated to have reached $580 Billion - by 2010 it's tipped to reach 1 Trillion dollars, equivalent to 18 per cent of all US buying power.

He quotes a lady named Sylvia Puentes (who is director of the Metropolitan Chicago Initiative),
"I see a lot of prosperity. I see a lot of entrepreneurship, businesses being created...", fact is, it's most likely going to be Latinos who will be working hard and paying the Bills for Helthcare costs and Social security as the Baby Boomer generation retires.
At the Democratic Nat Convention presentations to the Hispanic Caucus were among the best attended.
But as Marcelo Gaete (of the Nat Assoc of Latino Elected Officials - a non partisan advocasy group) said, "...that while Latinos leaned towards the Democratic Party, the Kerry-Edwards ticket could not take their votes for granted", and "If I was a Democrat I wouldn't bet my life on winning the Latino vote"
But equally at least at this stage, the Dem's hold a commanding lead. According to a poll published late last month by the Pew Hispanic Centre, the Democrat ticket was ahead 2 to 1 against the Republicans among Hispanics. If this division were repeated on Nov 2nd, it could well mean a change in government. Which is why the Republicans are directing enormous resources towards shoring up their support among Hispanic Americans.
In 2000, exit polls Bush got about 35 per cent of their vote, Republicans are hoping to increase this to 40 per cent.
Kerry has been practising up on his spanish, he told a 'Naleo' meeting recently
"Que America sea America. Para todos", which means "That America be America. For everyone."

Key states during the election, Arizona, Colorado, Florida, Nevada and New Mexico - which account for roughly 10 per cent of the electoral college vote, and all of whom have sizeable Hispanic populations...ALL went to Bush, bar New Mexico, in 2000.

As Rosalind Gold, (senior director of policy research at Naleo) says,

"The simple truth is...Kerry cant take the Hispanic vote for granted, but equally Bush cant write it off."

I'm a novice at American politics, but I would guess that this will be the key constituancy to decide this years election...and perhaps America's future as well.

Cleo,

The figures I quoted were from the article...Maths never really was my strongpoint... Thanx for correcting my (their) mistake!

Also, your correct about the voting age situation, the article (it's fairly long...this is just the first part out of five) talks about this in some detail,

"From '96 to 2000, the number of Hispanic voters increased by more than 1 million" and "Fully 35 per cent of Hispanic Americans are under 18 years of age" okay, okay, I know MORE numbers, I agree they don't tell the whole story, but the Financial Review is a business paper so stats are its bread and butter - even though as you pointed out - in classic aussie style, they are usually wrong anyway!!!

In the years to come both sides of US politics are going to try and court this group, this is really interesting stuff (at least to an ignorant Aussie gringo "vato" (???), like me who hasnt been to America - hope to one day!!!), this is THE group who will decide America's future.

Huey,

Have you heard about a guy named Oscar Zeta Acosta? He was a Lawyer-Revolutionary. He defended various Chicano protest groups and activists like Saint Basil 21 and Rodolfo "Corky" Gonzalez...he even ran for LA County Sherrif!

I first read about him in a Hunter S Thompson book (he also appears as a fictionalised character in "In Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas"), from the story I read, it seems that in the late 60's - early 70's Hispanic LA was virtually at civil war on the streets of the city...but his "disappearance" in May '74 still remains a mystery, Thompson reckoned it was either a political assasination or murder at the hands of drug dealers. His body (presuming that he is dead) has never been found.

500 years. Thats a long time..............................

Seems to me that ALL the advancements of civilization over the last 500 years were the product of the caucasians and orientals while the "Black, Brown and indigenous peoples" went no where. And are still going no where.

But if I'm wrong. please tell me what contributions were made by the "Black, Brown and indigenous peoples" in the last 500 years.

And spare us your diatribe of how whitey has held you back.

Just the accomplishments of the "Black, Brown and indigenous peoples" please.
