Admiral speaks out, disputes Kerry's account of 1st wound

August 27, 2004

BY ROBERT NOVAK SUN-TIMES COLUMNIST

NEW YORK -- Retired Rear Adm. William L. Schachte Jr. said Thursday in his first on-the-record interview about the swift boat veterans dispute that "I was absolutely in the skimmer" in the early morning on Dec. 2, 1968, when Lt. (j.g.) John Kerry was involved in an incident that led to his first Purple Heart.

John Kerry and his swift boat supporters are beginning to make me think of McHale's Navy! "I'll lie, you swear to it." laugh.gif

I wonder what would happen if they really checked things out, found out Kerry lied to get Purple Hearts, then went home on his lies.....

he's already/finally admitted the story the SWFT told about the day he saved the guy out of the water was in fact true! He admitted he is the one who left the other 3 boats behind after the one got hit by a mine and that the guy who fell overboard fell off his own boat after something hit in the water beside their boat...but yet in another place, an obituary for an old friend, he tells the story again jokingly about how the guy fell off when they made a quick turn!

At least the SWFT stick to one story...and you know what they say about liars....they can't remember their story so it's always changing! LOL

I was watching MSNBC this evening and I saw Retired Rear Adm. William L. Schachte Jr. being interviewed. He is no nutcase. He claims to have been on the boat with Kerry during the first purple heart event. He said that they thought they saw something on the shore and they opened fire. Guns jammed and no fire was returned, then there was the unmistakable sound of a grenade launcher, and then he realized that Kerry had launched a grenade too close and injured himself. He did not put Kerry in for a purple heart because there was no hostile fire. They were mistaken, and there was nothing along the shore, no muzzle flashes or sound of shooting. The higher ranking officer above Schachte concured, and no after action report was prepared. Kerry then learned that he did not need a higher ranking officer to nominate for a purple heart, he could do it himself, and he did. The first purple heart came three months after the event. Since, he was only there for four months, I suppose he might have gotten the second or third purple heart before the first one. Schachte said that he only learned about the purple heart after reading a biographical book about Kerry within this past year.

The story will not go away. In fact, more issues continue to surface. Possibly the latest to surface is the prospect that some of Kerry's citations had their language tampered with. In Kerry Citatiion a 'total mystery' to Ex-Navy Chief , the former Navy Secretatry, John Lehman, states that the language to the Silver Star citation contained additional language that he did not approve.

Former Navy Secretary John Lehman has no idea where a Silver Star citation displayed on Democratic presidential nominee John Kerry's campaign Web site came from, he said Friday. The citation appears over Lehman's signature.

"It is a total mystery to me. I never saw it. I never signed it. I never approved it. And the additional language it contains was not written by me," he said.

The additional language varied from the two previous citations, signed first by Adm. Elmo Zumwalt and then Adm. John Hyland, which themselves differ. The new material added in the Lehman citation reads in part: "By his brave actions, bold initiative, and unwavering devotion to duty, Lieutenant (jg) Kerry reflected great credit upon himself...."

Asked how the citation could have been executed over his signature without his knowledge, Lehman said: "I have no idea. I can only imagine they were signed by an autopen." The autopen is a device often used in the routine execution of executive documents in government.

Kerry senior adviser Michael Meehan could not be reached for comment on Kerry's records.

This story, Kerry's military record, will not go away. And even if both parties wish to forget it, the momentum will not allow it to stop any time soon.

No, it will not stop soon, perhaps in November though.

It's really getting to him too, watching him pull his hair out over this is great!
