GOP Convention Day One - Ron Silver and Michael Moore Symbolize the Night

Unlike our coverage of the Democratic Convention, we will not be giving grades or commenting on every speaker. The reason? Most of the folks up on the dais are normal and not spitting angry, unlike the freak show held yesterday in the streets or last month in Boston. If we have one complaint it's with the RNC "correspondents" who are "interviewing" people. They're a bit annoying.
And while John McCain and Rudy Giuliani had the prime speaking slots, and both gave amazing and moving speeches - or in Giuliani's case, a spectacular "conversation" more than a speech - the real message tonight was reminding people was that 9/11 happened (and the speeches of the family members and the Amazing Grace performance nearly had us in tears) that the war on terror goes on.

And oddly, the night was symbolized by two members of the Hollywood industry, both used to perfection.

While we here at crushkerry.com are not big fans of John McCain the politician, tonight was probably his finest moment since he was elected. Why? Because of the eloquence in which he connected the dots from war in Iraq to the war on terror in a way even President Bush has not been able to do thus far. Further, his passionate and logical defense of the Bush doctrine drew a very distinct difference between President Bush and the "sensitive" war wanted by John Kerry. And the reason we get so aggravated at McCain - his longing for media acceptance - actually works for us tonight.

Perhaps the coup de grace of the McCain performance was his direct hit on overweight low budget filmmaker Michael Moore. Not only because it's about time Moore got just a bit of what he so richly deserved, but because it slams Kerry without naming him.

Face it, Moore is the face of the Democratic party and of the loony left "Anybody But Bush" crowd. To people in middle America, Moore represents everything that is wrong about the left and the lunatic fringe. To be blunt, it says to people, "Look, this guy wants Kerry to win, as to all the nuts like him". That enough cost Kerry thousands of votes in places like Ohio and Wisconsin.

Rudy Giuliani, as he so often does, told it like it is. He mentioned that the terrorists, Saddam, and Libya "heard from us", just as President Bush promised. Giuliani, who has credibility all across the political spectrum, vividly recalled 9/11, and why President Bush's actions show the leadership and resolve the country needs to go forward.

Giuliani's best moment was the history he lesson he gave on what happens when terror gets appeased. In short: Terror begets terror. Comparison to Neville Chamberlain and pointing to the lunacy of an Arafat Nobel Peace Prize, what logical or sane person could argue that President Bush's offensive war on terror is wrong? And it was an awesome touch to mention how Reagan and Churchill were vilified by the press, but were proven to be right, and effective.

The beauty of the speeches tonight is that except for once at the end of Giuliani's speech John Kerry's name was not mentioned, because it didn't have to be. He also proved that Kerry's whine that his service and patriotism are being attacked is nothing more than whistling past the graveyard. All mentions of him simply stated his voting record and its logical inconsistency. A great line about how this flip flopping is the real reason John Edwards is talking about "two Americas". An effective boosting of President Bush and a nailing of Kerry (without being "angry"). All in all, a great job that kept people hanging on every word.

But surprisingly, the night's whole message was summed up by reformed liberal (on national security issues anyway) Ron Silver. As he so simply and genuinely stated: "We Will Never Forget, We Will Never Forgive, and We Will Never Excuse".

Like McCain and Giuliani, we likely wouldn't agree with Silver on much, but on the most important issue of our time - the war on terror, he gets it.

We suggest a name for such folks - "Ron Silver Democrats". We have a feeling there are a lot of them out there who will pulling the lever for George Bush.

That site was actually funny in its DNC critiques.
They should have quite while they were ahead.
They are much better at TRASHING than the toady speak about the RNC.

I liked the way McCain emphasised...

"Americans first, last and always" and (refering to his good friend John Kerry) "we are not enemies".

McCain is a Radical Centrist, he knows that the cold winter America has endured for decades under the big parties duopoly is coming to an end...

Soon Spring will arrive.

Good point.
President Kerry can work very well with Senator McCain.
The rest of the republicans? Forget it. Just have to vote out those hopeless fascists.

I didn't post this to be funny. Like the articles they wrote for the Democratic Convention this is an accurate critique of tonights proceedings. Kerry lost millions of votes tonight Thai, so i am ecstatic as to the contrast between the two parties. The only thing that makes me sad about this election season is that you have absolutely no clue as to how big kerry is going to lose this race.

Although you piss me off no end, and you are stubborn to a fault, i am concerned about your psychological well being when your choice for Antichrist loses his bid to control the free World. i am afraid for you because anybody that could buy in to the lies kerry has told you has to be suffering some serious brain deficiencies and could go off the deep end when reality sets in. biggrin.gif unsure.gif blink.gif

If you actually believe Kerry lost millions of votes tonight, it is YOU who is brain damaged!

What you don't understand is that the average American wants to be inspired and lifted up. They got Gays, Pedophiles, Abortions, Teen age sex, America bashing up the yang yang, Socialists, skinheads, and the Communists at the DNC. Tonight they saw a vision and a hope for a possitive future. A future with the morals and values that made this country so great. That's why Tom Daschle is running ads with him hugging George and not lurch. Kiss your -ss good bye Thai, your backing a shallow gutless loser, and you know what that makes you ?
Thaiquila
I will grant you one thing.
They have the TWISTED BRAIN vote locked up.
You are seething.

We have endless LOVE for you
And we forgive you

Politphile is aboslutley right when he says that people are finally seeing a great future, with vision.

That's what Bush bings to the table. Dynamism, diligence, virtue....that's what this country has embodied in the president, and that's what the country needs to continue.

Finally a thread that is not centered on radical left-wing conspiracy theory. rolleyes.gif
- Not to drag your thread off topic politiphile but could someone please explain to me why people feel the need to start tons of new threads at one time? Have they never heard the adage "Quality not quantity." Other than ThaiQ, most don't even stick around to see what becomes of the thread they started.....

Sorry for hijacking this thread to get that off my chest.... back

Rudy Giuliani, gotta love this guy!... well maybe Huey doesn't, but he hates everyone so his vote doesn't count tongue.gif He shows what real charisma is.

Campbell, I'm going back Rudy G to your Jerry Springer in 2008! biggrin.gif

Cleo,

RG is certainly an excellent speaker, similar to Obama he's every part the natural politician. The audience seemed to really be moved by his passion. McCain also spoke well...but the part where he mentioned MM got out of hand - which is a shame, because content wise, I believe his message of unity to all Americans (both DEM and REP) in a time of War was timely.

RG in 2008? Well before his speech I would have said...No way Jose! But after it, yep, he's a definite chance. Coming from NY could be a plus and/or a minus...but he does know how project himself in way that I believe will appeal to the new millenium voter.

But be warned...

When you see Jerry get hitched (on live prime time TV of course) to Oprah a couple of years from now...then all of America will be chanting

Jerry! Jerry! Jerry!

or maybe even

Oprah! Oprah! Oprah!

Don't laugh...stranger things have happened in political history!

I'm not so sure. There was something a bit scary about that rally. I know everybody was psyched up to the max but to me the whole thing looked a little manic. At least Kerry's balloons didn't work which was a nice human touch. smile.gif

I loved Rudy G's 'conversation' speech...and while I realize conversation is not something the far left can handle, as they much prefer stabbing attacks that breed anger, envy and hatred, I thought RG made an excellent point.....that optomists can envision a future of peace and so find ways to work toward it, whereas pessimists don't envision anything...they only see the past and work negatively. Optomists offer hope, pessimists do not. Optomists have faith in their fellow man, pessimists do not. Optomists bring hearts together, pessimists exclude anyone who is happy in their heart. Republicans = optomist, The Democrat Party as it has become is pessimistic. Brilliant! Rudy would make a great president!

Don't jump to conclusions. I'm optimistic about some things and cynical about others. I just don't believe in optimism for its own sake. I saw a lot of balloons and cheerleading at that convention but precious little substance. Still if its optimism you want you got a heavy dose. smile.gif biggrin.gif smile.gif

I can't watch any of that cr*p for more than a few minutes. The BBC is OK and PBS. But MSNBC, CNN and FOX seem to be geared to teenage morons. Political conventions are basically a feel-good session for the party faithful. Somebody still has to sweep up the confetti. smile.gif

I watched MSNBS on my friends digital televison recently, and the pace of it was too much for me! I think my attention span is too long to concentrate on such snappy news and commentry..

I'd rather have the thinly veiled bias, but in-depth coverage of the BBC.

I am well aware of that. Nevertheless I like to check periodically to find out what kind of pablum is being fed to the masses. smile.gif
