The best thing about this Convention is, i don't feel like i'm slumming as i'm watching it. It was dignified and inspiring and just knowing that the people in Washington understand the seriousness of the threat we face makes me feel safer.
GOP Convention Day 2: Arnie/Laura 08!
Watching tonight we were reminded of Bush 41's famous 1992 gaffe where, instead of reading the prepared speech text, he mistakenly read a note in the margin: "Message-I Care." And in case you didn't know Republicans care there was big old sign in the back saying "People of Compassion". Don't get us wrong, we understand that the GOP has to "play the game" and try to show everyone they're not evil people that want to starve seniors, poison water, kick dogs, take food out of the mouth of kids, etc. etc. etc..
Still, we were a bit disappointed in learning that tonight's theme was going to be "sensitivity" and "compassion" for two reasons. First, if the GOP were able to resurrect Mother Teresa the Democrats would say she only gave 23 hours per day to the poor, and they would do better by giving 24 hours. Second, the media would spend all night pointing out that Mother Teresa only agreed with 749 of the 750 specific planks in the party platform and saying how her speech was simply window dressing for the moderates in the country.
However, that disappointment quickly dissipated after hearing "The Governator". Arnold Schwarzenegger brought down the house in a way only he could and gave a perfect speech about what it means to be an American. It's going to be fun watching the Kerry people trying to attack him. The first night was near perfect both in message and delivery. Because of the theme of the evening tonight could not match it. However, if the GOP had to fall over themselves saying how much they care, they pulled it off pretty ###### well - despite the very hot Bush twins appearance.

As we have said in the past we are conservatives (and thus thinking people) and surely don't agree with a number of things President Bush has proposed and passed. First, the theory of accountability behind "No Child Left Behind" is noble, but the simple fact is that the bill simply throws more money down the pit of public schools without the real threat of privatization. Thus, forgive us for not getting excited about all the focus on the increase in education spending. Further, the Prescription Drug Bill is a socialistic concept that will bankrupt us in the future, and while we absolutely love Medical Savings Accounts, the cost of getting them wasn't worth it. And you can't "outcare" Democrats because they will just call you heartless for not spending more.
But as we said, most of the speeches came off pretty well. Bill Frist was incredibly dull (and just fell way behind Rudy for the 08 nod) but he took dead aim at ambulance chaser John Edwards and his ilk, calling them "predators". The tort reform issue is incredibly important, and Frist's medical background makes him the perfect spokesman. All he needs is an infusion of personality.
For our money, Ohio Lieutenant Governor Michael Steele should have been given a slot where the major networks would have given him more coverage. He risked the wrath of the "civil rights" establishment by being a black man speaking out in favor of conservative principles of self-reliance and telling government to get out of the way. His message "Hope is not a strategy" nailed the Democrats where they live. Why? Democrats think that "caring" about things is enough, but come up woefully short on achieving what they wish for. He also nailed Kerry good, using Kerry's own words against him. He mocked John Kerry's concern about using the word "war" to describe our efforts against terrorism. Then he said: "I don't want to use the words Commander in Chief to describe John Kerry". We won't hold our breaths waiting for the media to fawn over Lt. Gov. Steele the way they did for Barack Obama.
Arnold was the first big name of the night, and he delivered. His self deprecating humor is positively Reaganesque, and is able to zing the Democrats without seeming "mean" (which was after all antithetical to the evening's message). His speech about what it means to be an American and personal story is well known, but is extremely effective no matter how many times you hear it. If any of you have ever been around immigrants from Communist countries you can hear the pride in being an American and love for the country when they speak about their experiences. His slam of the UN and what it means to "be a Republican" were perfect in expressing conservative principles. And the use of the term "girly-man" was a well deserved "F--- You" to the PC police.
Plus, you can tell Arnie is pretty fearless guy. He spoke about how much he admired Richard Nixon, which of course will drive the press and lefties nuts. And he mentioned how much he loved John Wayne, a symbol of American manhood that has become passe in this modern world of "metrosexuals".
He also took on the issue of how not all Republicans agree with the GOP platform. Good move. Why? The liberal press has been able to talk about nothing else. He addressed the issue in a way that was respectful to the majority of conservatives in the audience and in the party. But you know what's amazing. Republicans have internal conflict, but at least they are intellectual differences and are a sign of thinking people
Here's our only beef with this amazing message. The GOP, and all other parties for that matter, are afraid to take on the problem of illegal immigration. We understand the need to get the Latino vote, but at what cost? Another area in which the President has disappointed us is in his unwillingness to more strictly control the Mexican border.
The Bush twins were next. God they're gorgeous. No wonder the Olympic wrestling team was drooling over them. Still, we can see that there's a reason they didn't talk to the press for a while. While some (like me) realized it was tongue in cheek and kind of funny at times, we can see how the mainstream press and entertainment media (and those without a particular sense of humor) could view it as a train wreck. Still, they're kids which makes it a bit understandable (we can't imagine living under that scrutiny, especially at that age), because they have plenty of time to find careers that don't involve giving speeches. Although the "hamster" line was a nice dig, whoever wrote their material should be fired. It was a bigger buzzkill than a high school party getting raided by the cops.
Laura Bush wrapped up the night. Mrs. Bush simply oozes class and dignity. This is truly the President's best decision. While first ladies never make a difference in elections, Mrs. Bush is a terrific asset and treasure that should be used whenever possible by the Bush campaign.
Generally, most speeches by candidates wife's are puff pieces telling us how great their husband's are. Tonight's was no different, but under the surface you noticed something else. Laura Bush is a very strong woman with definite opinions on things. But she has the good sense, respect, and deep love for her husband (unlike a certain heiress and certain Senator we could mention) not to go shouting them from the rooftops. We get the feeling that behind closed doors Mrs. Bush is a close advisor to the President. We don't mean in the Hillary sense of setting and giving specific policy advice, but rather in someone who has a good "BS" detector that she is not afraid to share, but only when asked. We can't imagine what it's like to be a First Lady, constantly hearing the man you love compared to Hitler, especially when it is obvious that whatever he does, it's done out of the ability to help people and let them live in freedom.
But most importantly, she helped more in just being herself. We can all remember the utter disaster that was the Te-RAY-za Heinz Kerry debacle Her speech could have been entitled, "It's All About Me". Mrs. Bush is so far above her in class, self-respect and dignity it's not even funny.

Ali, I thought that the twins were left wanting, and the Kerry daughters shined over them by a long shot. They sounded like the quintesential "valley girls". Oh my G-d, what a pair!
They may be cute, but their public speaking needs a lot of honing.

No i'm not joking at all. The Dems did absolutely nothing to inspire confidence in their ability to carry on the war on Terror. Arnold made a great point in saying that being an American meant not giving our Democracy over to the U.N. And him being from a Socialist country, even back in 68 he saw that Hoover sounded just like the Socialists he just left in Austria, but Nixon spoke for the peoples Rights and Freedom for all.
I have said it before and i'll say it again, The American People have NEVER EVER EVER voted out a sitting President during a War. This President appreciates the threat and will do everything possible to keep the war over there.
John L, your right, they are young but presentable. Thank God we aren't voting for them though.

Shows how superficial you are.
Kerry's daughter could have been naked with donkey sized sex toys protruding from all available orifices, and she still would have been a CLASSY LADY compared to those ditzy tramp daughters of bush.

TQ, if I based my assessment on your criteria, and then turned it upon you, I COULD conclude that you were a "misogynistic, narrow minded, masochistic, Queer". But I reject the assessment of the twins, just as I do about the words above concerning you, my Collectivist friend. Why should I, because I have no evidence to the contrary.
I simply stated that they did a very poor job of presenting themselves before the convention. I haven't the slightest ideas about their morals, but I am sure that the Secret Service watchers ensure that their morals are kept strictly in line, or Daddy will come down on them.

There is no way bush gets even 54 percent; you are dreaming.
My most fervent wish now is a popular vote win for bush and an electoral vote win for Kerry.
Quite possible and simply wonderful poetic justice for a man who bullied his way into office in the first place.

I will hold you to that Thai. If you had any real guts though you'd let me, John L, and GOP4life pick the country you would move to. My choice would be Siberia.
