While I'm not a fan of the conduct of the Japenese during the second world war, they are now one of the few nations supporting America in it's war in Iraq. Surely a note of thanks would be more appropriate.

One must accept the good with the bad on this one. Yes Japan is one of the few that have supported the US, but Pearl Harbor (which I do not consider near as atrocious as Nanjing) must be understood to be an integral part of the Japanese US interplay. Just as Nanjing is with the Japanese China interaction.

True but this is about Hiroshima, not Pearl Harbour. From a Japanese point of view a triumphalist attitude about dropping the A-bomb might seem a bit unfriendly.
