alright, EU is a reality nowdays. what about similar entity in Asia?

earlier there was some discussion about China- India partnership and how it would effect the politics and economics in Asia and World. now Japan also praises India as raising global power.

India and Japan should be "true global partners": Koizumi

QUOTE
"We are now in an era in which Asia is currently experiencing a process of transformation ...

... we see moves towards formation of an East Asian Community (EAC)".

Japan is Asia's largest economy while India is Asia's fourth largest and among the fastest growing in the region.
Both countries are making bids for seats on a proposed expanded UN Security Council and support each other's candidacies.

so, what are the perspectives and realities of EAC becoming second union in the world?

India to balance China's influence in the region ...

World leaders courting India's economic, geo-political muscle

QUOTE
....In China's case, analysts say its wooing of India is being made with a keen eye on the economic potential of closer ties as well as in light of Beijing's rivalry with the United States.

US Secretary of State    Condoleezza Rice made New Delhi her first foreign destination after taking over the job, offering Washington's help in making India a power on the world stage.

Rice has said Washington "should pay closer attention to Indias role in the regional balance... India is an element in Chinas calculation, and it should be in Americas, too."

Japan, a close US ally, is also seen to be cooperating with Washington in a new drive to build closer ties with India in response to China's growing influence.

India and China hate each other, ditto for Japan, Asean etc. They see each other as rivals, not partners. It'll require a WWIII or even WWIV to push these guys to have a union like in europe.

America is scared of future oil consumptions by a growing India and China. America and China still support Pakistan against India, so all these media reports are just BS.

Everybody wants to reek economic benefits while still preparing political and military doctrines for future conflicts. Was same story in Europe before WWI.
Ogre
What about the option of Japan voting to have a more aggressive military in response to China's militant wing, North Korea?

U.S. Base Closures Cause Jitters Abroad

QUOTE
While the United States works out its biggest set of domestic military base closures in decades, countries from Germany to South Korea are bracing for a major restructuring as well, with new hosts being courted and as many as 70,000 U.S. troops expected to head home over the next decade.

The most prominent upshot has been the Defense Department's plan to save billions of dollars by closing or reducing forces at 62 U.S. bases and reconfiguring 775 others.

may be the shift is coz of change of priority from Far East to ME. or may be coz of emergense of other powers in the region ?
Trixie
Big deal.

Nazi Germany and Soviet Union had a pact and co-operation, but they still hated each other.

China is trying to encircle India and supports Pakistan. So don't see where this is going.

Confidence building measures.... like please China/India, fool me once shame on you, fool me twice shame on me.
