Bond delivers blistering partisan speech in North Carolina

Civil rights activist and NAACP Chairman Julian Bond delivered a blistering partisan speech at Fayetteville State University in North Carolina last night, equating the Republican Party with the Nazi Party and characterizing Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and her predecessor, Colin Powell, as "tokens."

"The Republican Party would have the American flag and the swastika flying side by side," he charged.

Calling President Bush a liar, Bond told the audience at the historically black institution that this White House's lies are more serious than the lies of his predecessor's because Clinton's lies didn't kill people.

"We now find ourselves refighting old battles we thought we had already won," he said. "We have to fight discrimination whenever it raises its ugly head."

He referred to former Attorney General John Ashcroft as J. Edgar Ashcroft. He compared Bush's judicial nominees to the Taliban.

The talk so infuriated at least one black family in attendance among the 900 in the auditorium that they got up in walked out in protest.

"He went on and on name calling," said Lee Wilson. "I walked out in the middle of his speech with my wife and three kids"

The harsh partisan rhetoric from Bond should not have surprised anyone who has followed him in recent years.

In July 2001, Bond said, "[Bush] has selected nominees from the Taliban wing of American politics, appeased the wretched appetites of the extreme right wing, and chosen Cabinet officials whose devotion to the Confederacy is nearly canine in its uncritical affection."

It would say what he said was amazingly irresponsible, but that's SOP from that side of the isle these days.

While the GOP is sucking our pockets dry with their favors to k-street and their own pork filled coffers - The term Nazi is way too extreme - for the GOP to be considered nazi like they would have to be more efficient and we all know that ain't possible considering runawy deficits and an inability to serve the people with anything resembling a higher purpose.

Well - under republicans we have runnaway government spending with a bloated and much larger government machine that does less and less for us and more and more for the well connected, pork piled sky high in GOP districts, deficits climbing to the moon and beyond, corruption and scandal after GOP scandal filling the air waves and newspaper pages - this has to cost us - the US Taxpayer a lot of money - so I rest my case. he ones spending the money are usually the ones who control the purse strings - the republicans.

Whitewashing a Black Leader

Isn't it newsworthy when the leader of a venerable organization like the NAACP engages in such over-the-top, crackpot rhetoric? (Or, if you're an over-the-top crackpot and think Bond was right, isn't it newsworthy that the leader of a venerable organization like the NAACP is telling the truth about the evil Chimpy W. Hitliar?)

Why did the local media ignore Bond's crazy talk? (The speech doesn't seem to have received any national attention outside WND and cable chat shows.) The most likely explanation, it seems to us, is that they recognized the talk as crazy and felt it would be invidious, inflammatory or both to depict a respected black leader as crazy--even though doing so would have been merely a matter of quoting his own words.

What we end up with, then, is a double message, very much like Yasser Arafat* talking peace in English while inciting hatred in Arabic--except that in this case Bond is speaking a language everyone understands, and reporters, whose job is to report the facts, are instead concealing them. Bond's mostly black audience at Fayetteville hears his message of division and resentment, while the broader public is told that he has a "positive attitude" and is engaged in a "fight for equal rights."

And then people scratch their heads and try to figure out why blacks' political attitudes are so different from those of nonblacks.

Taxes? I never said anything about taxes durring this post - I said the Gop is sucking us dry. Period.

You think bloated and an engorged federal government, Katrina recovery costs, war costs and higher military expenditures, unlimited GOP pork barrel spending - huge federal and trade deficits that have grown under Bush as well as the request to push up the US Debt ceiling, huge tax cuts for the rich and for Oil companies, is free? Do you really think this is so?

I wonder what would have happened if someone had thrown a pie in this @sswipe Bonds face or threw salad dressing at him the way these enlightened libs do with a conservative speaker such as Ann Coulter.

Greyman, this is over the line. A certain amount of anomosity toward other members will be tolerated here given the nature of politics but this is not the first time your posts have contained juvinile invectives and a decided lack of maturity. Your ice here is beginning to thin.
