McCain Rejects Kerry's VP Overture

WASHINGTON - Republican Sen. John McCain has personally rejected John Kerry (news - web sites)'s overtures to join the Democratic presidential ticket and forge a bipartisan alliance against President Bush (news - web sites), officials familiar with the conversations said Friday.

Kerry asked McCain in the last two weeks to consider becoming his running mate, but the Arizona senator said he's not interested, according to a Democratic official who spoke on condition of anonymity because Kerry has insisted that his deliberations be kept private. A second official involved in the discussions confirmed the account and said the Arizona senator made it clear he won't change his mind.

Both officials said Kerry stopped short of formally offering McCain the job, sparing himself an outright rejection that would make his eventual running mate look like a second choice.

"Senator McCain categorically states that he has not been offered the vice presidency by anyone," said McCain's chief of staff, Mark Salter, who would not confirm the officials' account.

Kerry spokeswoman Stephanie Cutter would only confirm that senators have talked during the campaign, "including when Kerry called McCain to thank him for standing up and defending Kerry against baseless political attacks."

The expectations aren't that high, but he has the potential to be a democratic Reagan, inspiring new hope in the REAL AMERICAN VALUES (not the Bush hatred and fear) and it is clear Kerry's main contribution will be to bring HEALTH CARE ACCESS to most Americans, a worthy goal with so many aging baby boomers.

I actually liked Reagan personally and have a lot of admiration for Nancy, but I think Reagan policies were totally flawed, except for the way he dealt with the Soviet Union. He deserves credit for that.
Bushs policies are also totally flawed and he is eminently UNLIKABLE because he has not cheered up America like Reagan did, but BUMMED it out with his hate politics of fear and divisiveness.
We need to dump him, the sooner the better.
