Let's make the question more challenging.
What is the worst government in South East asia?
Depends what you consider worse means:
Myanmar gives 0 freedom to his people.
Indonesia is so corrupted that they do not even know what their people are.
Philippines, they know but they do not care. All the money for a few "privileged" families.
...
I do not even know what country to vote for,...

OK, finally I voted for the Philippines.
They are the only "true" democracy in the region, most of the people speak english and government after government seems to apply themselves to ruin further the country.
Lee Kuan Yew sayong comes to mind:"If the country is poor and people are not sufficiently educated because poor, democracy is not the best way to achieve development,..."
In the case of Singapore and Malaysia, at least, he was right,...
But for Indonesia, the non democracy theory did not work that well,...

In the nineteenth century the various colonial governments administered their own migration acts. Thus the Queensland, Western Australian and South Australian governments ( the Northern Territory was then part of South Australia) were able to stop northern Australia from being flooded with asian immigrants. This prudent policy was called the WHITE AUSTRALIA POLICY.
Most Australians still support this discriminatory approach to immigration intakes.

The fact is though it's more their country than yours. By right of settlement.

Land 'ownership' is a white man's concept. To aboriginal people it is a silly concept; to them only God owns the land. This was a very unfortunate situation for Aboriginals in Australia and the tribes in the Americas.
Hunters and gathers by nature 'move' with the herds and the seasons. It is a very spiritual way of life and closer to God than any Christian, Muslim, Hindu or Buddhist could ever hope to be. When they feel that they have used the land enough they move on and let the land regenerate. They may return to it in a few seasons or years. There is no waste or exploitation of resources.
All this sounds so peaceful and idylic; so what happened? Well to make it short,
white settlers came ashore, saw how beatiful it was, started putting up fences and writing funny pieces of paper for the natives to sign. The natives were worried because their hunting grounds are blocked. Settlers give weapons to different tribes along with firewater and the rest is history.

Well yes and no. Sure The whites siezed the opportunities in front of them and are responsible for the destruction of thier nomadic culture. The natives have subsequently learned from us how to work the system and have learned western opportunism. Looking at native americans and in particular in alaska you can see this.
Before we came along thing really werent so idyllic. They had villages and wandered the country. The different villages or tribes would meet at specific trading spots and trade. But quite often if they met away from these places they had no compunction about killing the other guys and stealing thier stuff. .
Did the white man teach them to be opportunistic? I dont think so. I think its a human trait.

They have only in recent histoy been given title of lands. In a couple of generations they will be managing very well i'm sure. It is a right they have been denied for too long and had the White people actually invested the time to work WITH them in the past mabe the place would be better managed than it is now.
They managed very well for a long time and to say a nomad culture don't manage the land they have been given is pretty stupid.
Before White settlers they went where they wished and lived OFF the land and didn't need to manage it.
It's a western concept and they are forced to work in that alien culture. Of course it will take time.

Drewshocks, your comment is typical of a lot of racists. You want the Asians, blacks, and Aborigines out, probably the Arabs as well I'd imagine.
Your type gets resentful when native people begin making progress and bringing themselves out of poverty, hence your opinion that Aborigines should have their land entitlement taken away. It's the same in America. After decades of living on dusty reservations, Native Americans have become very wealthy from sucessful
casino businesses and now some white immigrants (you can call them Americans if
you'd like) are angry and jeleous and are calling for the removal or gross taxation of these businesses. See past the colors mate, see people.

Agreed no denying those atrocities, but I think they were dealing with the plains indians the only was they could think of at the time. Remember the plains indians were'nt exatly a docile group of people. In fact they were quite frighteningly vicious.
A case could be made that the english/european/us occupation of the americas was'nt any different than any other force of nature. ie floods, fires, earthquake, droughts, volcanoes, sunami's ect.

Totally agree. We have the same problem in the UK around areas occupied by a group called the BNP or National Front. Burnt out cars, garbage, drunks in the gutter. You name it. These tribals should be kept in rural areas, Dogger Bank or Morcambe Bay. They get a good wash once a day. They live off whelks anyway so they'd be right at home.

I hear what you are saying Bob, but I think the farther away we humans distance ourselves from a natural way of living the worse off we will be. The mass consumption of shody products, pesticides in the soil, air pollution, cancer causing chemicals in food, ect.. are all killing off these tribal people who have a vast knowledge of plants, soil, animals, trees and language. Once they are assimilated
and paved over by concrete, that knowledge will be gone. Once they are gone where will we look to for 'help' with all the diseases and plagues that we will have

Yep when you look at the ecological disaster in progress that currently calls itself China you really have wonder whether modern economic development is good at all.
There are alot of good techno developments coming along. Thankfully alot is being saved in the ways of traditional medicine. Overall I'd say living conditions are better now that say 800 years ago. But that's also open to debate, especially given that my perspective is different than say the beggar lady on the corner of suk and soi 3.
But generaly I think today more people have the opportunity to lead lives of some privilege than before. Though I also think that we have become slaves to our technological advancements.
With the new computer tech coming along we are going to see some remarkable new things in the next few years.
I'm sitting here marveling at my new little laptop power book with an ipod that holds a mindboggling amount of music. There is even a little gadget that plugs into the ipod which transmits into any FM reciever, so you can play your ipod library through any car or home stereo instantly! Too cool

It's Burma not Myanmar, cut the socialist misnomers. But, Vietnam is the worst by far.
Demarcation of the land boundary with China continues, but maritime boundary and joint fishing zone agreement remains unratified; Cambodia and Laos protest Vietnamese squatters and armed encroachments along border; China occupies Paracel Islands also claimed by Vietnam and Taiwan; involved in complex dispute with China, Malaysia, Philippines, Taiwan, and possibly Brunei over the Spratly Islands; the 2002 "Declaration on the Conduct of Parties in the South China Sea" has eased tensions but falls short of a legally binding "code of conduct" desired by several of the disputants. The toilet of Asia.
