Since it is getting close to election season it is probably appropriate to bring up the subject of obscure and extreme political parties, as well as 3rd parties in the United States. One that causes the greatest confusion, mostly so amoungst its members is the Libertarian party and self identification as libertarian. On the surface it would seem that many Libertarian ideals would seem to hold to the traditions of Thomas Jefferson and his ilk, but in practice this party is really just the airport waiting room for anarchist/dems who are starting to realize that lack of validity in the democratic party has rendered them ineffective. Maybe there will be another flight on which they may be able to carry boxcutters? It is important to note that "ineffective" in dem terms means being an attention whore.
I have noticed at general libertarian gatherings that they are mostly composed of white male baby-boomers who have never really succeeded- but still smoke pot and like guns. Most have trades like HVAC technicians or maybe self employed landscapers, security guards or college students. You can really get to the core of most libertarians by pressing them out of the theoretical world and into the world of an organized realism. After awhile it seems like you are talking to an anarchist. What I read in the National Review some time back really does seem to sum up the libertarian party as a whole: " low brow, arrogant nihilism." Politically intollerant, but socially deviant with permissive self destruction and refusal of military service. Many libertarians claim, and at times show fetish for, affairs of the military, but in pratice the party is openly against the war in Iraq and Afghanistan and military service in general. Yet will probably be the first to give you the address of the local army surplus store. I have come to see this party as a safehouse for political cowardice, since it hosts such an aversion to the state and supports excessive and illogical individuality which manifests itself as indulgence. The support on paper for free markets and laissez faire capitalism looks good in a libertarians clutches, but when pressed to political action the "true" concerns of the average libertarisn come forward: elimination of sexual norms, legalization of drugs and education funding. They always try to avoid some of the more idiotic concepts of libertarianism like the push for the individual right to mint their own coin, the advocacy of children to have the same liberties as adults, no conscription even in times of national disaster and that jailing and prison are examples of state opression. Another fact oft hidden by libertarians is the wide acceptance that the individual exists in a state of victimization to the state (political entity) and that all transaction is governed by this victimization. In the end it is not much different than the speak of most leftists kin, accept that the out of the closet left lazily want the state to facilitate their self indulgences at the expense of others. While the libertarians want the state to intervene only when the over indulgences of their excessive self liberties have infringed on others (likely in their mind, engaged in the same pursuits).
Why is this a needed topic of concern now? In November you will see an inflation in the libertarian party numbers and it is important that we keep them out of office completely with the same vigor and thrust we should apply to all leftists. Putting one of them in office is like giving an english lit professor a creative wiritng job. Voting libertarian is voting for socialists who can't read.
