Without being able to link to article, ill put my two cents in. I do not believe the two go hand in hand. THOUGH, it does happen. I believe we do need strict border laws, especially today. I am all for the "melting pot" we so called have. Though, we do need a sustainable population density. The SW states and their cities are getting over populated; maybe from my alaskan viewpoint, due to low population density. I think, an arab COULD pass as a mexican to a layman, though are border patrol should be smarter than that. So, I believe that argument should be tossed out of the equation. We should be looking at our unemployment rate mostly. More Americans out of work equals a smaller economy. Being a die hard fiscal conservative, i believe American jobs should go to Americans, UNLESS, an immegrant or a citizen of another country, takes the proper steps to come into this country. America neeeds to look out for America first, not second, third, fourth or fifth.

The Border Guards in Texas seem to boast they can even tell one nationality of Hispanic from the other. I doubt an "Arab" would pass.

It appears that first-generation illegals (and that's about all that are ever illegal) do take jobs away from poorly educated, unskilled, lackadaisical White and Black workers near the 'bottom' of the employment rung. That's not a socioeconomic group for which conservatives' hearts bleed, anyway. And right along the border (say, San Isididro CA and Brownsville TX) the entire economy has depressing low wages for nearly every kind of employee (such as me. sad.gif

all-alaska, you have a good point, that the SW states are more heavily populated than Alaska; perhaps Siberia is, also. But we Texans used to say that if Alaska overheated, it would all melt! Seriously, it's too cold for migrants from southern states, usually. But my old boss said there were Mexican restaurants in Anchorage...maybe even in Nome.

The link works fine. Perhaps sometimes the LA Times doesn't work. MARK

A smuggler of migrant workers who fled from authorities by driving the wrong way on a freeway before ramming head-on into a CHP cruiser was convicted of smuggling and drug charges Thursday.

Jovanni Mendoza, 25, faces a possible 18-year prison term for trying to smuggle in 700 pounds of marijuana and five undocumented immigrants last year on Interstate 8 in the mountains east of San Diego, according to authorities.

No one was injured in the accident, after which Mendoza escaped.

He was arrested by U.S. Border Patrol agents a few weeks later after an intense manhunt.

I agree with all-alaska here: it's doubtful to me that these two smuggling activities go hand in hand. There is an immense amount of dope smuggling, which requires huge capital investments and special expertise. Smuggling aliens in, however, doesn't even happen that much. For example, guys like my buddy Carlos, would take the illegals only to the border, and let them hire "coyotes" to get them over. It wasn't like smuggling them in the trunk of the car, though (and the Border Patrol always opens the trunks or cargo hold of suspicious vehicles). They're usually two separate industries, although they both involve carrying illegal cargo into the USA.

But I must add that it's bad, bad, criminal, illegal, heinous, etc. As if we are sinless. Now, where's the first stone? blink.gif
