Propaganda machines are dangerous, even more so in a democracy than in a totalitarian regime, because their goal is to confuse, disinform, lie, raise fear and manipulate the opinions of the people.
Indeed, those few hands that control the media have the power to turn lies into truth and truth into lies, without being contradicted, because they also have the power to silence any competing voices. This is the worse monopoly one can find, much worse than any economic monopoly. Indeed, when a small elite in power start using propaganda intensively, it makes a mockery of the democratic principle of self-government by the people. In fact, people begin to distrust the government because it has become a source of half-truths, lies and disinformation. Discouragement and apathy follow because people know that their views do not count and that the oligarchy in power will do whatever it wants, no matter what the supposedly 'sovereign' people thinks. It is only when the media are free and independent that people can hope to be honestly informed and be free from government manipulation.
We have a clue about how powerful political propaganda can be when we consider that, more than a year after the Iraq invasion, just before the 2004 presidential elections, a Harris Poll reported that 62 percent of all American voters, and 84 percent of those planning to vote for Bush II, still were of the opinion that Saddam Hussein and Iraq had ''strong links" to al Qaeda, and 41 percent of all voters, and 52 percent of Bush backers, believed that Saddam had ''helped plan and support the hijackers" who attacked the USA, on 9/11. What's more, as an amazing tribute to the force of political propaganda and the tactics of big lies, a whopping 85 percent of the American soldiers themselves still believed, in 2006, three years after the invasion, the falsehood that they were fighting in Iraq “to retaliate for Saddam’s role in the 9-11 attacks," while 77 percent thought that a major reason for the war was “to stop Saddam from protecting al Qaeda in Iraq."
Today, a solid majority of Americans think that the Iraq war was a mistake and many are lucid enough to know they have been misled. In their grandiose plan, the neocon Bush team intends to have American troops occupy the country of Iraq illegally for as long as one can foresee. They built 14 permanent military bases there and they are constructing a military fortress disguised as an embassy to host the equivalent of a medium-size American town. That way, the United States is sure to be at war in the Middle East for decades to come.
Before the March 2003 invasion of Iraq, the neocon propaganda machine in the media, led by Rupert Murdoch-owned Fox News (News Corp), assisted by ABC (Disney), NBC (GE), CBS (Viacom), TBS (Time Warner), CNN (Time Warner), MTV (Viacom), plus the Weekly Standard (News Corp), the National Review, the New Republic, the Wall Street Journal (Dow Jones), the New York Post (News Corp), the New York Sun, the Washington Times (Sun Myung Moon), etc., initiated an all-out propaganda campaign to persuade the American people that Saddam Hussein was really the villain behind the 9/11 attacks, not the Taliban of Afghanistan or bin Laden's alleged al Qaeda terrorist network. Even today, most Americans ignore what really happened and why they have soldiers in Iraq to kill and to be killed.
As a rule, professional news media in a democracy should be independent, objective and, as much as possible, factual and neutral in reporting news and events. This means that they should not have a systematic bias and should not be under government control or under the total control of special interest groups. Indeed, to be informed is a prerequisite for the citizenry to be able to exercise its democratic rights. If the media systematically slant the news or remain content to serve as conveyor belt for state propaganda, this results into a direct attack on democracy itself.
Unfortunately, over the last decade, American corporate media have developed the lazy tendency of being "embedded" with the government and of presenting uncritically the government spin on things and events, as if this was always the truth. Some have gone so far in that direction that they seem to be reproducing the relationship that existed in the former Soviet Union between the government and the media, the latter being a simple extension of the former. A case in point: they have no qualms about accepting selective invitations to secret meetings in the Oval Office to be 'briefed' and cheered up in their public support of the Bush-Cheney administration.

Thanks to the powerful pro-Israel Lobby and its propaganda (Hasbara) machine, Americans seem to live on a different planet than the rest of the world. -- Americans, for example, are far more likely than Europeans to side with Israel in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. A Pew Global Attitudes survey taken between March and May (2006) found that 48 percent of Americans said that their sympathies lay with the Israelis; only 13 percent were sympathetic towards the Palestinians. By contrast, in Spain for example, 9 percent sympathized with the Israelis and 32 percent with the Palestinians. The main reason for this cleavage is the fact that Americans do not receive the same news as the rest of the world. In the U.S., news directly or indirectly involving Israel is filtered, slanted and adjusted by spin organizations in order to present Israel as the innocent victim, even when it does the killing and the destruction, as its indiscriminate bombings of civilian areas in Lebanon, during the summer of 2006, amply demonstrated.
For this purpose, for example, the Lobby has its own propaganda coordinating organization, the Committee for Accuracy in Middle East Reporting in America (CAMERA). Its mission is to see that American media (TV, radio, newspapers, magazines) toe the line on Israel and on American policies toward Israel, not hesitating in the process to smear journalists or authors who dare criticizing the actions of the Israeli government or who offer more balanced viewpoints. It also takes the necessary political steps to make sure that the Federal Communications Commission [FCC] does not impede the move toward concentration of media ownership in the U.S.
What are the conclusions to be drawn from all this?
First, there is the need for free societies to be aware when they are subjected to incessant and systematic campaigns of indoctrination and disinformation, the more so if it is to wage wars of aggression abroad. Second, the threat of excessive concentration of media ownership should always be a paramount preoccupation in a democracy, if freedom of information is to be preserved.

The Death of an American Terrorist

It is so cynical that the US, the self-proclaimed crusader against global terrorism, honors the death of an American terrorist, who was responsible for the deaths of 200 thousand East Timorese, many thousand deaths of Iraqi Kurds, and other hundreds of thousands of South American citizens. This terrorist was also an accomplice in violating international crimes, violated the American public trust and the American Constitution. This American terrorist was previous president Gerald Ford, who died at the age of 93 on December 26, 2006.
Ford was the only unelected American president. President Nixon, at the time, appointed him a Vice President to replace Spiro Agnew, who was forced to resign his office due to his bribery scandals. Later on president Nixon, himself, was forced to resign due to his own Watergate scandal. So Ford assumed presidency for two and half years.
Many American politicians describe Ford as America’s healer for ordering the final withdrawal of US troops from Vietnam in 1975, for offering amnesty to Vietnam draft resisters, and for restoring public trust in the administration after Watergate scandal. Ford’s death was honored with 21 guns salute, 21 fighter planes flying over his funeral, military honor guard carrying his casket, and naming a navy ship after his name. All federal employees and postal service workers were given a day off to mourn his death. Both New York Stock Exchange and the NASDAQ had closed to honor his efforts for advancing America’s capitalist system. A six days national mourning was announced for his honor.
Three living ex-president – Carter, Clinton, and Papa Bush- and the recent president Baby Bush attended Ford’s funeral and mourned him. President Bush described Ford as a man with “..quiet integrity, common sense, and kind instincts”. He also added “The American people will always admire Ford’s devotion … and the honorable conduct of his administration.”
Ford did not actually heal US from Watergate scandal, for he granted Nixon a full and absolute pardon for all his federal crimes. The pardoning had stopped all investigative efforts to really fully understand the real motives behind Nixon’s crimes, thus keeping the people in the dark.
Ford had received the presidency as his payment for pardoning Nixon. He revealed in his memoir that the idea of pardoning Nixon was discussed with him before replacing Nixon. General Alexander Haig “explained” to Ford that they need to promise to pardon Nixon so that he would agree to resign. This was a one-favor-for-another deal; a presidency for a pardon. In exchange for his ascendancy to the presidency Ford protected Nixon from facing judgments for his violations of international and domestic laws.
Nixon was responsible for causing the death of at least 600,000 innocent civilians when he ordered the bombing of Cambodia during the invasion and occupation of Vietnam. His wire-tapping was a grave abuse of his power leading the Congress to pass the FISA law in 1978 against such action. Although the IRS fined Nixon to pay $467 thousands Ford’s pardon allowed him to evade income tax persecution. Pardoning Nixon for his violations of the US Constitution, abuse of his political position, and violations of international laws made Ford an accomplice in such violations.
Ford played a major role in causing genocide (the death of one third of the population) in East Timor. Ford and his Secretary of State Henry Kissinger gave Indonesian dictator General Suharto the green light to invade East Timor murdering 200,000 people. General Suharto was supported by the CIA to overthrow Sukarno the president of Indonesia. The CIA provided Suharto with a list of 5,000 names of people identified as communists to be assassinated. To consolidate his regime Suharto’s army had massacred about one million Indonesian citizens using American supplied weapons. Suharto, then, was planning to invade East Timor.
In July 1975, during Suharto’s visit to the US, the American National Security Council and the CIA informed President Ford and Secretary of State Kissinger of Suharto’s plans to invade East Timor. Suharto’s fear that US disapproval might cut-off American weapons supply caused the delay of his invasion. During their December 1975 visit to Indonesia President Ford and Secretary of State Kissinger gave Suharto the green light to invade East Timor. Shortly after Ford’s plane had left Indonesia, American trained Indonesian paratroopers, armed with American supplied weapons, were jumping down from American supplied airplanes upon East Timorese capital, Dili, murdering thousands of people. The irony was that Ford had flown out of Indonesia to Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, where he gave a speech promising that US will never again allow one nation to attack another defenseless nation.
Through the Information Freedom Act Ford’s cables to Suharto reveal that Ford and Kissinger asked him to complete the invasion as quickly as possible (see www.nsarchive.org) so that it would not get the attention of press nor that of the Congress. Authorizing the invasion was a violation of US weapons law specifying that American weapons given to other countries must not be used for purposes of aggression. Becoming aware of the fact the Congress might have stopped shipping weapons to Indonesia. In the attempt to crush resistance and to occupy East Timor as quickly as possible Suharto’s army perpetrated genocide.
In describing the invasion Philip Liechty, the CIA desk officer in Jakarta at the time said: “we were ordered to give the Indonesian military everything they wanted. Women and children were herded into school buildings that were set alight”. With Ford’s green light dictator Suharto launched a campaign of American-supported state terror that lasted from 1975 to 1999.
Ford and Kissinger Duo also played a major role in the death of thousands of Kurdish rebels in Iraq. According to Najm Aldin Karim, President of the Washington Kurdish Institute, in an interview with Amy Goodman’s “DemocracyNow” program, Ford and Kissinger supported Kurdish rebels fighting the Ba’ath regime in Iraq. In a covert operation, and through the Shah of Iran, Ford’s administration was supplying weapons to Kurdish rebels. In 1975 Kissinger brokered the “Algiers Accord” between the Shah and Saddam Hussain, the Iraqi Vice President at that time. The Shah of Iran agreed to end his support to Kurdish rebels and to give Iraq equal navigation rights in Shatt Al-Arab in return for the oil-rich Khuzestan region. As a result of the Accord the Kurds were divided into two; one half in Iran while the other in Iraq. Those in Iraq were deported to the southern desert, where unknown large numbers of them (reported in tens of thousands) were murdered by the Iraqi forces.
Fords’ administration was also involved into CIA’s violent anti-communist military coups in South American countries such as Argentine that caused the deaths of hundreds of thousands of people. The CIA was also involved into covert cross border military operation such as Operation Condor, and the assassination of political officials such as the assassination of two Uruguayan congressmen on the streets of Buenos Aires in May 21st 1976, and the assassination of Bolivian President Torres in June 4th 1976. One assassination took place in Washington D.C. itself; the September 1976 assassination of Orlando Letelier, the Chilean foreign minister, and his co-worker Ronni Moffitt, who were harsh critics of Chilean President Pinochet’s human rights violations. To allow the CIA to conduct its operations freely Ford’s administration engaged in limiting the power of Congress to investigate any of these operations.
Ford’s corrupt domestic policies were overshadowed by his claimed “healing” of the nation. Ford actually was a politically weak president, who followed the ill-advised recommendations of his Secretary of State Henry Kissinger. Kissinger surrounded Ford with advisers, who later on formed the neoconservative present administration. Donald Rumsfeld served first as Ford’s chief of staff, and later as secretary of defense. Dick Cheney took Rumsfeld position as chief of staff. Paul Wolfowitz took a position in the Arms Control and Disarmament Agency. Papa George Bush became the director of the CIA in 1976.
Ford, himself, played an important role in misguiding the Warren Commission’s investigation of Kennedy’s assassination. He convinced the Commission to change its final report to conclude that one bullet had killed Kennedy and injured Texas Governor Connally affirming the “lone assassination theory”. Reporters, such as Robert Morningstar, pointed to Ford’s revision as “the most significant lie in the whole Warren Commission report”. (see http://www.jfkresearch.com/morningstar/).
History shows that Ford did not really serve the interests of the common American citizens. Like all American presidents, Ford slashed federal spending on many social service programs in order to increase military spending. Under the justification of motivating the poor to get off welfare programs, and motivating them to work to earn a living he opposed using public funds to aid the poor.
Like the rest of all presidents (his predecessors as well as his successors) President Ford was guilty of grave violations of the law, of war crimes, and of state sponsored terrorism. He was responsible for the deaths of more than one million people. Judging President Ford by the same standards used to judge and hang Iraq’s Saddam Hussain, Ford should be hanged rather than honored.
