67 days – BREAKING: It’s not Romney or Pawlenty – Karl Rove and Carl Cameron say it looks like Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin – pro-life rock star – younger than Obama – McCain speaks at noon ET

Rove: "It would shake up the coalitions for both parties" -- Obama promises “a new politics for a new time” after questioning McCain’s “temperament” -- Gustav strengthens aims for Gulf coast early next week, perhaps Tuesday – McCain ticket mate announced noon Eastern if it holds Friday morning. Senator McCain is a birthday boy. He’s 72.
McCain wipes Obama off cable this morning after his electric, once-in-a-lifetime blaze of fireworks, confetti, Skycam and chants of “USA! USA!” from an audience of more than 84,000 at Invesco Field at Mile High on the closing night of the Democratic National Convention.
Re VP: McCain’s Jill Hazelbaker tells CBS’s Maggie Rodriguez on “The Early Show” that the senator “is going to make the choice from his heart.”
Fox News' Cameron points to “a groundswell – overnight speculation” about Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, 44: “A surprise, last-minute dark horse for the selection. It now looks as though she, indeed may be the pick. No confirmation.”
Karl Rove tells Fox he doesn't know, but "it sure looks like it -- it sure smells like it." Calls Palin "a populist ... a reform-minded outsider" a bid for independent suburban women and "disillusioned Hillary Clinton voters."
Rove: "This would shake it up. It would be a clear sign from the McCain campaign that they were going to be making a very strong bid for the women whom they see up for grabs -- both the traditional, swing independent suburbanites and then the Hillary Clinton supporters who remain disillusioned. ... In the last 24 hours, we've seen both campaigns refocus themselves in a pretty powerful way on the Hillary Clinton supporters. ...
THIS IS KEY REGARDLESS OF WHO THE PICK IS -- Rove: "Let's look at the mindset of the McCain high command, which I think probably is reflective of the mindset of McCain himself. They look at this race as a very tight race where they have to do something unconventional to break out of the box. And in my conversations with them over the last couple of weeks, that's been a lot of what they're talking about: How do we shake this race up? How do we take a dynamic where they're doing better than they should, and shake it up in a way that makes it even better for them ... and create a new dynamic and a new coalition."
AP pronouncer PAY'-lin.
WOULD BE VIEWED AS GAME CHANGER. PUNDITRY WOULD FOCUS ON OBAMA NOT TAKING HRC.
Official bio: “Governor Sarah Palin made history on Dec. 4, 2006, when she took office. As the 11th governor of Alaska, she is the first woman to hold the office. … Sarah Heath Palin arrived in Alaska with her family in 1964, when her parents came to teach school in Skagway. She received a bachelor of science degree in communications-journalism from the University of Idaho in 1987. … Palin is a lifetime member of the NRA and enjoys hunting, fishing.”
Bob Beckel tells Fox it would be “a risky pick but he needed a risky pick … gutsy.”
Reuters: “The governor of Alaska would appeal to conservatives due to her strong anti-abortion views and her fiscal conservatism. The former beauty pageant winner is an avid sportswoman who would bring youth and vitality to the ticket. But the first-term governor is not well-known nationally.”
She doesn't have much experience working for her or name recognition, truthfully. And her lack of foreign policy experience- and general experience- will be accentuated next to Joe Biden. Still, Biden will obviously need to monitor his behavior; it's not politically correct but honest to say but Biden's role as the proverbial 'attack dog V.P.' will have to be harnessed in debates w/Palin lest he counter-productively go all Lazio on Hilary Clinton. And Palin might prove to be endearing to many Hilary supporters, speaking of Hilary. Anyway, if she's the choice it's certainly an intriguing one that also represents a risk. The Democrats may have pulled off a strong enough week in Denver to convince McCain that has no other recourse but to take a risk. It'll still take time for Americans to become acquainted w/Palin.
I think Hillary’s supporters will see right through this. Palin wasn’t picked b/c of her experience as a leader. She was chosen b/c she has a vagina. It’s degrading to women & I think it will backfire. As an Obama supporter I’m happy with his choice.
Besides the vag, Hillary and Palin have nothing in common
